Extracurricular Activities
IT Club
What I did:
As the leader of my school’s IT Club, I mentored underclassmen and organized weekly sessions focused on coding, networking, and cybersecurity. I developed lesson plans that introduced students to key technical skills, such as programming basics, game design, and ethical hacking. We also took on hands-on projects, including scanning our school’s network for vulnerabilities and developing simple games. My role involved coordinating these activities, guiding students through troubleshooting, and fostering a collaborative environment where everyone could learn and contribute.
Why I did it:
I started leading the IT Club to create a space where students could explore technology beyond the classroom. I noticed that many of my peers were interested in coding and tech-related fields but didn’t know where to start. By organizing the club, I aimed to make technology more accessible and engaging, encouraging students to apply their skills through practical projects. It was also important to me to build a community where students felt comfortable asking questions, experimenting, and learning from each other. Leading the club allowed me to share my passion for tech while helping others develop their skills and confidence.
Journalism Club
What I did:
As the captain of the editing team in my school’s journalism club, I led a 15-member group in producing videos for events like Sports Day and Halloween. I also coordinated yearbook content and managed updates for the school’s website and Instagram, ensuring consistent and engaging communication.
Why I did it:
I took on this role to develop my leadership and communication skills while exploring my interest in media production. Leading the team allowed me to foster a collaborative environment, helping others improve their editing abilities while creating content that brought our school community closer through shared experiences.
Debate
What I did:
As a member of the debate teams at both the Asian Debate League and Ascent Academy, I competed in regional tournaments, earning 2nd place in one event. I honed my skills in crafting logical arguments, identifying flaws in opponents' logic, and engaging effectively in crossfire questioning. My preparation involved extensive research on geopolitical issues and historical contexts to strengthen my debates.
Why I did it:
I joined debate to improve my critical thinking and public speaking skills. Engaging in debates helped me learn to analyze complex topics, think quickly under pressure, and articulate my thoughts clearly. It also deepened my understanding of global issues, encouraging me to stay informed and consider different perspectives when forming opinions.
